This site is dedicated to the men and boys that served, fought, and died under the colours of His Majesty's 44th Regiment of Foot, also known as the East Essex Regiment.
The East Essex was just another regular line regiment, however, like many other line regiments, the 44th were just as vital a part of the British army as the more higher profile units. From a disastrous baptism of fire at Prestonpans in 1745, the 44th were at the forefront of action at Salamanca and Waterloo, and in more recent times, it's decadent regiments have been the recipients of several Victoria Crosses.
